U.S. Scholar Opportunities in Iceland
Fulbright Iceland offers a variety of different research or teaching grants for U.S. Scholars in the 2026-2027 academic year. Some of the highlights of the current application cycle include exciting multi-country grants:
- Fulbright Iceland-NSF Nordic Award in Arctic Security
- Fulbright Greece-Iceland Joint Award for Arts and Design
Our teaching grants include an all-fields grant, and for this cycle only a grant to teach Folkloristics at the University of Iceland.
Arctic awards continue to be a major component of the Fulbright Iceland grant program:
- Fulbright-Ministry for Foreign Affairs Arctic Grant (teaching or teaching/research)
- Fulbright-NSF Arctic Research Grants

Opportunities for U.S. Students
There are various Fulbright opportunities for U.S. students to study at Icelandic universities or to do independent or PhD research in Iceland. For the 2026-2027 award cycle, Fulbright Iceland offers the following grants for U.S. student applicants:
- Fulbright-National Science Foundation Arctic Research Grants for PhD students and students with a completed master’s in all social and natural science fields.
- Fulbright- Ministry of Culture Award to learn modern Icelandic at the University of Iceland.
- Open Study/Research Awards to study in a degree program at an Icelandic university or engage in independent study/research.
