Iceland Ocean Cluster CEO shows grantees the variety of innovative products developed there

Throughout the spring, Fulbright Iceland organized a range of events giving our U.S. grantees the opportunity to experience Icelandic culture, institutions, innovation and community.

In the new year grantees enjoyed a visit to the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavík, a women’s handball match and invigorating sea swimming at Nauthólsvík.

Additionally, grantees visited the Iceland Ocean Cluster, where CEO Alexandra Leeper introduced them to Iceland’s growing blue economy and the role that innovation and entrepreneurship play in making better use of marine resources. The visit highlighted how new ideas, start-ups and cross-sector collaboration can create greater value from the fishing industry, including through the development of new products and uses for resources that might otherwise go to waste. It also gave the grantees insight into how Iceland has built an innovation ecosystem around one of its most important industries, bringing together entrepreneurs, researchers and established companies to explore more sustainable and profitable ways of working with the ocean.
