On December 15th, 2020, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development Cooperation and the Fulbright Commission Executive Director signed an agreement to continue the Fulbright-MFA Arctic scholar grant program for another three years. For the past 6 years the program has brought US scholars to Iceland to teach in areas related to the Arctic. Executive Director Belinda Theriault thanked the Minister for recognizing that the program played an important role to increase knowledge of Arctic issues and advance Arctic scholarship in Iceland. Foreign Minister Gudlaugur Thór Thórdarson said on this occasion that “the Fulbright-MFA agreement has proved to be a useful tool indeed to promote Iceland-US cooperation in the Arctic. Outstanding US scholars had been given an opportunity to spend a semester in Iceland and bring new knowledge and perspectives to local academia. While this was in and of itself valuable, even more valuable were the long-term collaborations and connections that the Fulbright-MFA grants enabled.”
